    Topic

“What Really Happens Behind the Wall?

This presentation uses humor and group participation to address the myths, realities, & challenges of employing ex-felons. Statistics from national & regional correctional resources will help to broaden employer awareness on prison population demographics and average cost to incarcerate an individual. The workshop will explore ongoing training and education programs that teach work ethic and technical/trade skills designed to assist inmates to secure long term employment and reduce the rate of recidivism.

    Presenter

Guest speakers will include a November 2012 released individual who will share his reintegration journey to find employment, and representatives from the Oregon Employment Department who will share information on incentives available to employers that assist in hiring ex-felons.

Kevin Alano, SPHR, is in his eighth year as Oregon Corrections Enterprises’ (OCE) Human Resource Manager.  OCE is a semi-independent state agency that administers prison industries and work programs in partnership with the Oregon Department of Corrections.  He serves as the Diversity Director of the Salem SHRM Chapter and is a past President of the Oregon State Personnel Management Association.  Before joining OCE, Kevin worked for the Oregon Department of Transportation as its Human Resource Development Manager, Employee Safety & Health Manager, and EEO/Affirmative Action Officer.  Kevin is a retired U.S. Army officer having served with the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), 18th Airborne Corps, 82nd Airborne Division, and 7th Infantry Division (Light).  He and his wife, Bernadette, raised three millennials and enjoy using Skype ™ and travelling to visit them as often as possible.

“Kevin is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and easy to listen to. Great topic. Prizes – nice touch! Interesting information J . . . . To really understand the successes [ex-felon] gained – you need to know the whole story!”
