SHRMA Presents: Employment Law Update 2023

    Presentation Overview:

In this presentation, Barran Liebman attorney Sean Ray will cover the most recent employment law changes impacting Oregon employers.  Topics will include compliance with changes to the Oregon Workplace Fairness Act, changes to federal protections for pregnant and nursing employees, Paid Leave Oregon administration, and more.  He will also cover anticipated legislation such as the proposed independent contractor rule and the Federal Trade Commission’s proposed ban on non-compete agreements.  With each legal development, Sean will provide attendees with practical tools and advice on how to adapt to these changes, avoid human resource pitfalls, and maximize compliance in their workplaces.

    Presenter:

Sean Ray is a Partner at Barran Liebman, representing management in complex employment matters and high stakes litigation. He defends employers against discrimination complaints, sexual harassment lawsuits, and retaliation claims, wage and hour claims, and represents employers in state and district court, as well as before Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) and the Washington State Human Rights Commission. In addition to being well-versed in trial skills and high-profile litigation, Sean works with employers to ensure compliance with changes in the law, including drafting and revising their employee handbooks and providing customized trainings to address harassment and discrimination in the workplace. Sean’s clients value his solution-oriented approach and focus on long-term business success.

Sean regularly writes about employment law cases and decisions, and his columns can be found in such publications as the Portland Business Journal, the Daily Journal of Commerce, and Oregon Business Magazine. He often provides on-site employment law training to help businesses prevent workplace grievances.

Sean is committed to supporting the Ronald McDonald House of Charities, currently serving on their Governing Board for Oregon & SW Washington.  Prior to his elevation to the Governing Board, he served as a member of the Young Professionals’ Friends of the House Board since 2015.  He is also a past Board Member of the Multnomah Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section where he voted as the Multnomah Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section Delegate to the American Bar Association.  Additionally, he served as the 2014 Co-Chair of the American Bar Association Young Lawyer Division’s Bullyproof Program which received praise for its implementation in the Portland Public School District.  Sean also served on the Campaign for Equal Justice Associates Committee, and is a past member of the CourtCare Advisory Committee.

Sean received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Portland, and earned his J.D. at the University of Oregon.
