The Pros & Cons of Unlimited PTO

Description:

A policy that has been growing in popularity recently seems like a dream come to true to both employees and employers--We are talking about unlimited paid time off.

Employees love it because it they gain the freedom of taking as much time off as they need without worrying about accruing hours (or using those hours before the end of the year); Employers love it because it’s a great recruiting tool that improves employee happiness and doesn’t cost much to implement. So what’s wrong with a seemingly win-win situation?

In this presentation, we will introduce the concept of unlimited PTO in addition to the various pros and cons of the policy. We will also look at it from not just the perspective of employees and employers, but also from the perspectives of different generations of employees.

Hayley Hill

Coming from a background in customer and client services, Hayley was immediately drawn to Human Resources when she started at Willamette’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management. She has served as the President of the student SHRM chapter for the past year and has coordinated numerous events for her classmates, included two financial wellness workshops, a recruitment panel, and a nutrition workshop for busy college students. Recently, she has been developing a training program for the Willamette HR office on employee resilience under the guidance of her advisor, Ashley Nixon, and will be completing a paper on establishing an HR office in Ireland with her professor, Lisbeth Claus.

In her spare time, Hayley enjoys health and fitness and can be found frequently at the gym. She has been a personal trainer in the past and would love to manage a fitness center or an employee wellness program someday. Her favorite book series is Harry Potter (Go on, ask her about it!) and she has 4 Bichon Frises that she adores. She is also looking forward to graduating this May and exploring Ireland this summer.

Colin Rice

After graduating from the University of Oregon in 2012, Colin spent five years working in management for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. In that role he was always drawn to the concept of employee development and retention and creating policies  to help the company grow. He has served as the elected first year representative of the Willamette University SHRM chapter for the past year and has helped promote and organize several on campus events to help educate and develop his fellow students. Recently, he has been working on a portfolio project focusing on best practices as it relates to the repatriation of mortal remains with his professor, Lisbeth Claus.

In his spare time, Colin enjoys community service and giving back to his school. He currently serves as a section chair for Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity overseeing the operations of 6 student chapters around the Northwest. In addition, he serves as the director of marketing for the Seattle chapter of Active 20/30 international, where he gets to promote the club and build relationships with several organizations including the Ronald McDonald house of Seattle. He is also an avid sports fans and can often be seen at any Oregon sporting event as well as all Seahawks games. He is looking forward to exploring his interest in Human Resources more this summer and graduating from Willamette in the spring of 2019.

Isobel Rubin

Isobel is a 3-2 student at Willamette University getting a major in Sociology and a minor is Civic Communications and Mass Media. Graduating Willamette in 2017, she continued to get her MBA with a focus in Human Resources and Marketing. She has served as Vice President of SHRM Atkinson Graduate School of Management chapter. She has been a Human Resources intern at Unitus Community Credit Union for this past year working on recruitment best practices and working cross-functionally with the Marketing team to improve recruitment to draw from a larger pool of applicants. She also worked to develop a streamlined, online-only application process using the Applicant Tracking System, ADP. She is currently working on creating an official  internship and job shadow program, as well as enhancing the Unitus dress code.

In her spare time, she loves to explore different hiking trails around the Pacific Northwest. In addition to being outdoors, she finds time to travel having the opportunity to attend an international baccalaureate school and the American School of London for four years. She is also looking forward to graduating in May pursuing a career in Human Resources.
